The Indian Film Federation has selected Zoya Akhtar’s “Gully Boy” as a contribution to the international feature film category of the Academy Awards.
The picture, a narrative about an aspiring rapper in Mumbai’s Dharavi slum, premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in February before a wave of acclaim was generated at home in India.
With the main actors Bollywood A-Lists Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, the film generated around 37 million dollars worldwide.
Excel Entertainment was produced together with Tiger Baby Productions.
The jury was chaired by the experienced actress and filmmaker Aparna Sen (“Sonata”).
Since 1957, India has applied in the category of the formerly foreign-language film.
The country has been nominated three times, starting with the first entry “Mother India” in 1957, followed by “Salaam Bombay” in 1988 and “Lagan” in 2001. It has not yet been decided to win the category.
